Clipping Path, Cut-Out, Deep Etch, Knockout, Contour….call it what you like but it is a way to separate your images from their studio backgrounds.

Products shot in the studio need to be removed from the studio background before they can appear on the themed pages of the catalogues and magazines that we see every day and the carefully designed websites that we browse at lunchtime when the boss isn’t looking.

This separation is done by hand using a pen tool to create a vector clipping path, usually in the industry standard imaging application, Adobe Photoshop.  A clipping path is an outline, embedded into the file, that tells an application which areas of a picture should be considered transparent.  If an image is furry or hairy a digital mask can be painted onto the image to get the same result.

Clipping Paths are very resource intensive, especially when dealing with large numbers of images or complex images like jewelry.
